Last Sunday, Cross Canada Check-up asked, how will you celebrate Canada Day 2021?

Recent News items have left me with feelings of regret, sorrow, and shame with regard to the Residential School program in Canada. On this Canada Day I will devote time to reading the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC), 94 Calls to Action. This document, published in 2012, is available as a free pdf download on the TRC website https://nctr.ca/records/reports/ .

I will explore the website titled, How the Government of Canada is responding to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 94 Calls to Action. https://www.rcaanc-cirnac.gc.ca/eng/1524494530110/1557511412801

The Calls for Action requested that our Citizenship Oath be revised to recognize the Treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis peoples. For the first time, June 22, 2021, the new Oath was taken by 31 new Canadians and now reads: “I swear (or affirm) that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to her majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, queen of Canada, her heirs and successors, and that I will faithfully observe the laws of Canada, including the Constitution, which recognizes and affirms the Aboriginal and treaty rights of First Nations, Inuit and MeĢtis peoples, and fulfil my duties as a Canadian citizen.”

Let us thank God for Canada.
