Easter has come! Let hymns of praise be sung...
The strife is o’er, the battle done; now is the victor’s triumph won; O let the song of praise be sung, Alleluia!
He closed the ancient gates of hell, the bars from heaven’s high portals fell; let songs of praise his triumph tell, Alleluia!
On the third morn he rose again, glorious in majesty to reign; O let us swell the joyful strain, Alleluia!
This five verse Easter hymn is derived from a 17th century Latin poem. The English translation quoted above was made by Francis Pott and published in 1861.
