This is day 14 of our Lenten Journey. Lent gives us an opportunity to look in the mirror of God’s expectations and desires for us and to see, dimly, how we are growing. Does our life align with God’s hope for us?
According to the Lectionary for next Sunday, Lent 3-Year B, we will hear the story of the giving of the Ten Commandments. As a boy I remember these laws being read at least once a month in the Sunday Service. As I listened I would mentally tick off those I had kept. Later in life I realized that such score keeping was not the attitude God looks for.
Jesus got into arguments with the religious leaders of his day because they were into keeping the Letter of the Law and He was into keeping the Spirit of the Law. These two approaches to life often rubbed against each other creating many heated exchanges. When the Ten Commandments are boiled down, the Spirit of the Law is revealed; you shall love God, and you shall love your neighbour as you love yourself. This is the mirror that God invites us to use as we proceed on our Lenten Journey.
