This is Day2 in the Season of Lent. Congratulations on entering the wilderness by way of Ash Wednesday. What can we expect in the wilderness? That depends upon what moved us to go forward into this desolate place.
When the Hebrews left Egypt under the guidance of Moses they entered the wilderness in order to be free from oppression and slavery, and to start a new life in the Promised Land. As the Book of Exodus describes, they faced many challenges and temptations which taught them to put their whole trust in God and to obey God’s commandments. The failures and the successes of their journey were spread over 40 years at the end of which they were ready to cross the Jordan into the land of Promise.
Lent gives us 40 days in which to renew and revitalize the decision made at our Baptism to put our whole trust in Jesus Christ, our Saviour and our Lord. Yesterday we began with the penitential service of Ash Wednesday. Today we continue by examining what has come between us and Jesus. Let us ask for the inner strength of the Holy Spirit to put this temptation aside, giving thanks for Jesus’ presence with us always. Remember, Lent is not a walk in the park; it is a journey through the wilderness.
