Merry Shrovetide, Happy Pancake Tuesday, Filling Mardi Gras! There are many names for today. Today is the Tuesday before the beginning of Lent 2021. This is the day of preparation for the Season of self-denial and self-examination.
Before we enter the Season of abstinence it is advisable to remove whatever might tempt us to indulge. We could put the item in a lock-able cupboard. Or, if the item is not going to be detrimental to our health we can use it up in a special Mardi Gras dish. That is how pancakes have come to be a popular item on Shrove Tuesday. Or, if the item cannot be buried in the freezer then it could likely be deposited in the compost container, the Green Bin. A last resort is the Garbage Bin. This is the day to house clean by removing those things that tempt us and others!
Here is a recipe that I have used for 35 years for making Pancakes. In a bowl thoroughly mix: 1⁄2 cup of powdered milk, 1 cup of whole wheat flour, 1⁄2 cup quick rolled oats, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/8 cup of baking powder; the following are optional, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, 1⁄2 cup dried raisins or cranberries.
Add: 1 cup water, 2 tablespoons cooking oil, 1 egg without shell. Mix together. Cook in usual way.
