Perhaps you have heard someone refer to “bread” as “the staff of life”. They are saying that we need to consume our daily food in order to have the strength to do what needs to done. I would suggest that even though our daily bread is indeed necessary for life it is not our top most necessity.
The number One necessity for a fulfilling, rewarding, peace-filled life is our daily, moment by moment, conversation with Jesus our Lord. Yes, prayer is the staff of life.
In the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 4, verse 4, Jesus quotes Deuteronomy 8:3, in response to one of the of the Temptations he faced in the Wilderness; “It is written, Man (and woman) shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” Throughout his earthly life, Jesus, practised what he said and as the Gospels tell us he was constantly in conversation with our Father in heaven. Prayer was the staff of life for Jesus.
You and I, as disciples of Jesus, are to learn from our Master/Teacher and follow him. What better way is there than by beginning and ending each day in prayer, and pausing momentarily throughout the day to pray, “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on me, and help me to see your hand guiding me forward.....I put my faith and trust in You, thank you.”.
God bless you in your conversation with Jesus, our forever, always, Friend,
Derek
